Outreach to the Academic Sphere
*The Role of Unified Science in the Moral Orientation of the World
Reverend Moon has been working towards the realization of a God-centered ideal world through cultural, social, economic, and, most especially, religious activities. Combined with the established foundation of various academic conferences and associations, he has striven to accomplish humankind's common ideal and goal of a peaceful world.
Rather than go directly to the public, Reverend Moon's intention has been to have prominent scholars whose research and achievements have brought them close to Reverend Moon's thought, represent his ideas. He has thus lent his full support to the establishment of a community of intellectuals centered upon the idea of world peace. Early on in his work, Reverend Moon anticipated the rise of the "age of information," and has therefore pointed out the roles intellectuals could play, as well as to which ends they could usefully direct their research. This includes pooling research done on the subject of absolute values, through inter-disciplinary exchange, and harmonizing academic disciplines with absolute values.
He had been pondering such work from as far back as 1968, at which time established the International Cultural Foundation (ICF) to bridge the academic and cultural spheres. This foundation supports international academic communication, cooperative research and publishing, and has helped scholars to exchange positive values. It has set up regional, national, international, and religious networks as the basis of a new civilization. The ICF has also offered opportunities for scholars to address issues and points of concern at a variety of conferences and seminars, and has encouraged them in their research efforts.
Upon this foundation, the International Conference on the Unity of the Sciences (ICUS), the Professors World Peace Academy (PWPA), and the International Christian Professors Association (ICPA), were established.
International Conference on the Unity of the Sciences
* THE 18TH ICUS HELD IN SEOUL IN 1991
Under ICF auspices, ICUS has been held annually since 1972, usually in late November during the Thanksgiving holiday season. This is an international academic conference convening prominent scholars for discussion of the diverse problems facing the modern world.
Up until the twentieth conference, in 1995, ICUS has continued to stimulate dialogue and pursue the common welfare of humankind through topics promoting mutual understanding among academic fields, such as the direction modern science should go, the relationship between science and human values, and between science and absolute values.
Professors World Peace Academy
*THE FIRST PWPA WORLD CONGRESS, HELD AT THE LITTLE ANGELS PERFORMING ARTS CENTER IN SEOUL
PWPA is an association for academic research comprising professors from around the world, and from a diversity of fields, whose interests lie in matters related to world peace. The academy was established by 168 Korean professors on May 6, 1973, and now has chapters in over one hundred countries. The professors forming the membership of the academy, whose head office is now located in New York, keep in close communication with each other through the exchange of both scholars and research materials. The founding objectives of the academy are as follows: to overcome the crises of modern civilization through academic research; to smooth cultural conflicts between East and West; to establish the idea of world peace; and to devote itself to the promotion of a new culture. As one of its main activities, PWPA has regularly held the International Conference on World Peace. Each affiliated chapter regularly holds seminars for the research and study of matters pertaining to peace, and promotes the publication of academic journals.
World Research Institute for Science and Technology
Reverend Moon's belief, from early on, that worldwide equalization of advanced technology would be necessary for the realization of world peace, finally resulted in the founding of this institute. Having first set up a center for research into the field of electronic engineering in the United States in 1983, he officially launched the World Research Institute for Science and Technology, on March 21, 1984. The institute has focused its attention on developing new methods of applying advanced technology, as well as on the promotion of theoretical science.
