Culture and the Arts
God's ideal for His creation is the realization of joy. Humankind was created as an object of goodness for the joy of God. The Unification Church considers its cultural activities and performing arts as expressing the value of humankind and God's ideal of creation.
Moreover, from a social viewpoint, we can see that these projects, rather than resulting from artistic egocentricity, reflect a universal perspective, because art itself is a means of global communication. Accordingly, great artistic works have always moved people, regardless of time and place. Especially in this present age of vigorous international exchange, artistic expression can plainly reveal and communicate ideals to the world. The Unification Church, through its various cultural and artistic activities, has thereby made effort to return joy and glory to God, and a message of hope and goodness to humankind.

The Universal Ballet Company was founded on July 13, 1984, combining a western art form, classical ballet, with the oriental spirit of Korea. The company was established to promote Korean ballet throughout the world and to increase international cultural exchange. UBC has been widely acclaimed for its performances of Swan Lake, Giselle, Coppelia, Pulcinella and many other works, starting from the company's very first performance, Cinderella. UBC's creation of its first commissioned full-length ballet, Shim Chung (The Blindman's daughter), based on a well-loved Korean folk tale, in cooperation with the New York City Symphony, was a real milestone for Korean ballet. The company has established itself as one of the foremost companies in Asia with its tours of Japan, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Europe, featuring performances of Shim Chung and Swan Lake, along with other repertory, and its reputation has been growing worldwide. The company's principal dancer and general director, Julia H. Moon, has performed as a guest artist at the Kirov Ballet in St. Petersburg, and at other companies in Europe and the United States.
In 1990, an affiliated ballet school, the Universal Ballet Academy, was opened in Washington DC. In 1993, the Washington academy was renamed Kirov Academy, and a Universal Ballet Academy opened in Seoul.
