The Words of the Kamono Family

Abduction and Confinement' No. 3 - Mamoru Kamono - Unification Church Rescue and Rehabilitation, by Tamiya Taguchi - Chapter 4 Rescue Operation from the Unification Church, Specific Methods

Explanation of the Rescue Flow Chart

1. Publications related to the Unification Church

Genri Kouron (Divine Principle), HSA-UWC Japan, Kogen-sha.

Touitsu Kyoukai karano Kyuushutsu (Rescue from the Unification Church), Tamiya Taguchi ed., Word of Life Press Ministries.

Touitsu Kyoukai = Genri Undou (Unification Church = Principle Movement), Sadao Asami, United Church of Christ in Japan Publications

Kenshou, Touitsu Kyoukai (Inspection: the Unification Church), Hiroshi Yamaguchi, Ryokufu Publishing Co.

Combating Cult Mind Control, Steven Hassan, translated by Sadao Asami, Kouyu Publishing Co.

Touitsu Kyoukai no Sugao (Unpainted Face of the Unification Church), Kyoko Kawasaki, Kyobunkwan Publishing.

Roku Maria no Nigeki (Tragedy of the Six Mary's), Park, Cheong Hwa, Kouyu Publishing Co.

Ai ga Itsuwari ni Owaru toki (When Love Becomes False), Hiroko Yamazaki, Bungeishunju Ltd.

Adorufu ni Tsugu (Telling Adolf), (5 volumes) by Osamu Tezuka, Bunshun Bunko Series.

Among these publications, No. 2 is impactful as the testimony of a former member. It gives many episodes, is easy to read, and touches on the Divine Principle, offering an overall picture of the Unification Church. No. 3 is the best seller among these publications. It reveals the reality of the Unification Church. Nos. 7 and 8 are easy reading, recommended for when you are tired. No. 5 is a tour de force, which takes time to read through.

Select one of these books, and pass one out to each of the clients requesting cooperation (relatives, friends, etc.) and ask them to read it well. If you give out many things, it is usually hard for them to read all. Depending on how they are doing, decide whether to buy the next book for them or not. Have them read at least one book completely.

No. 9 is a comic book series by Osamu Teduka, to be shown to the church member when he/she begins to have doubts about the 'Principle.' It is low-resistance and good for young people, who like comic books. The process of education depicted to persecute the Jews, is Mind Control itself.

The members have been told that there are books like Nos. 4~8 (they have been immunized to these), but have not really read them well. If you show these at too early a stage, they will not accept them, saying "They're lies, they are wrong."

If you can get a copy of the Divine Principle, glance through it. Without knowledge of The Bible, the mistakes will not be apparent.

2. Books related to Christianity

Seisho (Shin-Kaiyaku) (The Bible (New Revised Version)), Japan Bible Publishing Co., Ltd.

Tanoshiku Yomeru Seisho: Living Bible (The Bible to Enjoy: Living Bible (New Testament), Word of Life Press Ministries.

Wakaru Kirisuto-kyou (Christianity that We Can Understand), Arimasa Kubo, Remnant (Seiun-sha Co.)

Seisho Rikai no tame no Gaido Bukku (Understanding The Bible), John Stott, Scripture Union Japan.

Shinkou Nyuumon, Introduction to Faith (Basic Christianity), John Stott, Sugu Shobo Co.

Shinpan: Ichimon Ittou (New Version: Questions and Answers), Reiji Oyama, Word of Life Press Ministries.

Seisho Hando Bukku (Halley's Bible Handbook), Henry H. Halley, Bible Books Publishing Co., Ltd.

Yohane Fukuinsho Koukai (Explanation of the Gospel According to John), Volumes 1, 2, 3, Yasuo Sakakibara, Komine Shoten Co.

Kamiya Mieko Chosakushuu (Collected Works of Mieko Kamiya,) (Volumes 1, 2, 3 of 10), Misuzu Shobo Co., Ltd.

The doctrine of the Unification Church (Divine Principle) is a form of heresy of Christianity (a self-righteous interpretation of The Bible), and as it is based on The Bible, you should read The Bible. In order to understand The Bible, going to Church is recommended. Thus, if you decide to implement the rescue, have a Church recommended, and you should attend regularly.

At the same time, you should read The Bible on your own as well. You will not understand it by just reading it, but if you read No. 7 along with it, you will understand more about the background of The Bible and Christianity. No. 3 and 4, will also assist you in understanding The Bible (Christianity). Until the time of the rescue, look over at least the Four Gospels of the New Testament, and the Books of Genesis and Exodus in the Old Testament. If you read No. 8, you will understand the meaning of John's Gospel better.

After the rescue effort has been started, I believe No. 9 is suitable for the family to read together with the member. In other words, when the rescue work begins, the family will be asked to "study The Bible," together with the member; however, even if you read The Bible in turns, everyone will likely be absent-minded. Furthermore, the family will not understand the meaning of The Bible well, so not much will be registered in their heads. Therefore, reading it together with material such as No. 9, is recommended.

3. Is there an uncle, or an aunt whom the member has liked and respected since childhood?

It is easier to receive advice from such a relative. Moreover, to inform relatives and friends about the fear of the Unification Church, and to request their cooperation will help prevent new victims from appearing, (at least around them), and will further strengthen the bond within the family and friends.

4. Things to consider when searching for a house (room).

Types of housing available include a detached house, condominium, rental apartment (includes those rented on a weekly basis), each with pros and cons. At any rate, your own home or the member's own lodgings are unsuitable, as the Unification Church side can interfere.

Choose a place that is convenient for the persuader (if possible, a minister, former member) to commute to.

There should be a public phone (preferably a telephone box) nearby, to facilitate regular reporting. When using a mobile phone, make sure that the member does not overhear you, and that you do not leave it behind, especially when it is being charged. You may have to ask others not to call in, and if you will be making calls outdoors, there will not be much difference than going to a phone box.

It is good to have a convenience store (open 24 hours), or a supermarket close by.

It is also good to have parking nearby.

There should be a bank, or post office, close by. (Open an account, and make a deposit for the time being. Gas, water, electricity and rent should be automatically remitted.)

Points to note regarding the lease:

The contract is to be made in the name of the member. For 'occupation,' it is adequate to put down, for example, 'student,' or 'graduate student,' some occupation that is not bound by time.

The contract period will be at least one year. (Cancelling midway through the contract period is usually not allowed. A deposit (key money), advance payments, etc. should be prepared.)

It may be good to think of a reason why the parents are staying together with the member.

Points to note when renting an apartment:

Choose an apartment, rather than a detached house. There is less risk of an escape, and fewer windows to seal up from the inside.

Renting on a higher floor, 4th floor or higher, is recommended. One can jump down from the 3rd floor and lower. Especially if there is a two-story building next door, it is possible to escape.

A place with a bathtub is recommended (bathing several times a day, is good for a change of pace, and to get over fatigue.)

Cover up any security system (early warning alarm system) with boards.

It would be good to have air conditioning, but if not, ventilate the room well (to be described later.)

A two-bedroom unit with a dining kitchen is recommended. In one room, the parents or siblings will sleep on both sides of the member. Others can sleep in the second room. One room can be used for taking naps in turn during the day, to catch up on lost sleep. Particularly if the parents are of advanced age, it is better to have extra space to an extent, to maintain physical strength. Often, it is the parents who end up accompanying the member until the very end. Take care to preserve your energy as much as possible.

Apartments usually have good soundproofing, so that you do not have to be concerned about your neighbors. (However, when moving in, visit to give your greetings to the neighbors on both sides.)

If the apartment has a caretaker, study the situation. Check whether there is another passageway to your apartment, so you don't have to be seen from the caretaker's room, and know his work hours. (A large amount of material to seal and secure the apartment exits has to be carried in. Also, in the beginning, there will be much traffic of people, so you must not be suspected. When moving in, give greetings to the caretaker as well.)

Arrangements after the contract:

Completely lock from the inside, or block all places from where escape may be possible.

Put padlocks on the front door. Utilize the door stop with padlock to lock the door.

Caution: Put all keys on a braided cord and always wear it around your neck. Do not forget to watch the keys while bathing. It may be better to have number locks. At times, doors may not be properly locked, so make sure to check that everything is securely locked.

On all aluminum sash doors and windows on the veranda-side as well as the corridor-side along the front door, nail on transparent or semi-transparent vinyl (acrylic) corrugated sheets. Plywood boards make the room dark, and look strange from the outside, so they are not suitable. The key is to do the work thoroughly (excessively) to prevent risks and prevent escape.

If the acrylic boards are covered further with lace or light, white curtains, you can hide them when outsiders (e.g., bill collectors, apartment manager) visit without advance notice.

How to seal window sashes from the inside.

Tools to prepare - tape measure (measure the dimensions of the aluminum sash frames before purchasing the material), screw nails (two kinds, long and short), wire, hammer, mallet, pliers, screwdriver with plus, minus (it is convenient to have an electric drill).

Materials to prepare - long, thin square wood pillars (needs to be quite long. Most materials can be bought at home centers; if unavailable, have a flat board cut into pillars), acrylic, transparent (or semi-transparent) corrugated sheets (home centers will not cut these for you, saying they will crack; even if oversized, they will have to do).

How to nail on the corrugated sheet - (1) First, nail the wood pillars on to both sides of the window or door frame. Try not to damage the apartment interior, but this cannot be helped to some extent). (2) Spread the acrylic board horizontally as needed, and drill from the back side, using screwnails and electric drill (use the nail on the highest part of the corrugated board, to prevent cracking). (3) Finally, secure (2) onto (1).

If the aluminum sash windows have air vents, keep all of them on "Open" before sealing with the corrugated boards. If there are other air vents on the walls, set them all on "Open," taking care to keep the room ventilated.

In apartments, there are usually ventilating fans in the kitchen, bathroom, toilets, so that you can ventilate the rooms quite well?

Keep good track of things that could be used to inflict bodily injury (e.g., knives, drivers, etc.)

Remove doors or locks from places where you can lock yourself in (rooms with locks, toilets, bathrooms (easiest to hammer nails above and below the metal part in the door frame, so that the door does not close completely).

In one case, an escape was made through the "ceiling opening" for pipe work, inside a bathroom.

5. Household Utensils, Equipment (Required)

Tableware (some recommend disposable paper ware, or Bakelite)

Bedding

Rice cooker

Microwave, toaster

Refrigerator

Washing machine

Gas cooking stove

Lighting equipment (if there are not enough fixtures)

Air conditioner, if possible (good to have electric fans also)

Public phone should be close by, if not, a mobile phone. Other small supplies can be bought later, at convenience store or home center.

6. Food

Rice (10-kg bags), canned rice porridge (for post-fast use), instant ramen, instant miso soup, lots of instant food! Buy rice to last for about half a year.

Most other foods can be bought if a convenience store is close by.

7. Preparation Until the Day Before the Rescue

The rescue plan should be made in detail and meticulously! All members involved should reconfirm his/her own role, several times.

Still, be prepared for an inevitable accident. When this happens, all should follow the instructions of a single top leader.

When and where to implement the rescue, and the best way to transport from there to the place of protection, cannot be generalized, as it is case by case.

What can be said generally:

Make absolutely sure that the member will not notice until the end.

The more people at the time of the rescue, the better.

On the day of the rescue, have relatives and friends unknown to your child, stationed at various spots.

Must have a camera handy (in case of an interference, sometimes the other person will flinch, if you take a picture).

Use an 8-passenger van for transport. Only those who are close to the member will ride together in the van.

As for the driver and assistant, choose a skilled driver.

Be prepared for the event of a police 'questioning,' and bring a family photo to be able to identify yourselves.

Reference 1. Regarding Kidnapping and Confinement: "In recent times, the act of parents isolating and confining a child, who will clearly resort to unlawful and illegal behavior, is not a crime, as this is legally considered to be an emergency evacuation."

Reference 2. Averting Present Danger (Criminal Code, Article 37.) "An act unavoidably performed to avert a present danger to the life, body, liberty or property of oneself or any other person is not punishable only when the harm produced by such act does not exceed the harm to be averted; provided, however, that an act causing excessive harm may lead to the punishment being reduced or may exculpate the offender in light of the circumstances." [Unofficial translation taken from Wikipedia.]

How to constantly keep an eye on your child after taking him into protective custody. Based on our experience, a minimum number of three (parents and one sibling) seem to be the best.

8. Implementing the Rescue Operation

Stick to the initial plan to the end, and do not change arrangements recklessly at the last minute.

Silence is recommended in the vehicle, even if the atmosphere is heavy.

Don't reveal where the destination is.

Taking protective custody of the member is best done in the middle of the night.

9. Steps After the Rescue

This period lasts for two weeks.

After reaching the site for isolation, first of all, apologize sincerely to your child from your heart, for lying to take him/her away. Be sure to apologize so that the member understands clearly. We have heard that some parents got down on their knees with hands on the floor, to apologize.

At the same time, the most important thing is to make your child understand fully how concerned everyone has been. In any case, do things to make your child open up his heart. After this point, most of the relatives will usually leave the place. Many relatives may come at the time of the actual rescue, but it is difficult for them to stay long, to the end (sleeping over). (This cannot be helped, as they all have their lives to live.) It would be good if the parents and siblings, about three, can stay behind.

At any rate, do things so that the member will open his heart. If this has no effect, try demanding an explanation with close questioning, making him explode in anger (it would be better at this time, if outsiders who are not so close to the member, were not in the apartment.) It seems important to vary and use these two extreme attitudes well. Parents should not act timidly. At any rate, make your child realize quickly that he will not be able to leave the place as he is, that the only way out is to listen to the speaker. (However, at this point, the member is still high-spirited, and wants to refute those trying to persuade him, including the minister.)

This period continues for two to three weeks. The parents are there, from morning to night, face to face, so they begin to tire, not knowing what to say in the end. But, this is where you have to stand firm. Think about the speaker coming soon, and do your best.

Points to note at this time are:

Parents shouldn't talk too much, but try to get your child to speak as much as possible. (Nevertheless, he will usually not say much.)

Ask him why he joined the Unification Church, what kinds of things were good (enjoyable) after he joined.

Talk about childhood days. (Bring photo albums of his childhood.)

Remind him of things that were enjoyable in the past.

Parents should not try to persuade against the Church. (This is also quite difficult not to do.)

Try to make him lead a life with proper, regular rhythm.

Ask him to give "Divine Principle" lectures.

He may start to fast meals, but do not panic. If he has experienced a week-long fast before, he will fast up to a week. (Just in case, be in contact with a close family doctor.)

Be in frequent touch with the speaker, to receive appropriate advice as needed.

Supplement

Mr. Tamiya Taguchi states on the third page of his Rescue Flow , "When the (member) begins to understand, he will stop thinking with furrows between his brows, and his expressions will become calmer. He will begin to sleep better, without mumbling or crying out." He is saying that if the member can accept the explanations against the Church, his heart will be at peace. However, on the same page, Taguchi states something contradictory, that "following this [acceptance] problems such as flashbacks and fluctuation of the mind will still continue."

Rev. Makoto Sugimoto (United Church of Christ in Japan), who has long been involved with persuading Unification Church members to convert, testifies that there are numerous cases of former members having problems after leaving the Church.

He [Rev. Sugimoto] stated it was a fact that "by being rescued, 'there are some whose hearts are wounded,' and that whether this can be avoided or not, depends mainly on how much time the family invests in counseling. After the forced conversion, there are many tragic cases in which the family falls apart, or the parent-child relationship is totally destroyed." "Counseling after the rescue is not something that ends when the member leaves the Church, but what is needed is an approach that includes the view, of how the family can take care of the member, after the conversion, [the minister] strongly emphasized."

He is saying that care for a former member is extremely important, because there are plenty of tragic cases.

Mr. Taguchi's remarks that, "[a member's] expression becomes calmer," and that they sleep better, were made daringly in spite of the facts, in order to comfort the family who are about to go ahead with the confinement. In fact, there is a large number of former members, who continue to suffer from PTSD and other serious damage, following the forced conversion.

Furthermore, Mr. Taguchi explains as follows in his Note "7. Preparation Until the Day Before the Rescue," under the item, "Reference 1. Regarding Kidnapping and Confinement: "In recent times, the act of parents isolating and confining a child, who will clearly resort to unlawful and illegal behavior, is not a crime, as this is legally considered to be an emergency evacuation."

However, on April 20, 2000, Jin Hinokida, then a Liberal Democrat member of the House of Representatives, presented a question at the Lower House's Oversight Commission on Audit and Administration, regarding freedom of religion: "Is it possible that acts such as kidnapping, confinement, violence, inflicting bodily injury, which are penal offenses, will not be charged as criminal acts if they are committed between parent and child, or husband and wife?" Then Commissioner General Setsuo Tanaka of the National Police Agency, stated in response, "Be it between parent and child or relatives, if an act that goes against the law is committed, we will deal fairly with every person, based on the law and evidence."

We must know clearly the fact that freedom of religion is a right that cannot be one-sidedly trampled upon, even if it is among family.
