In 1984 Reverend Moon became the first foreigner in American history to be sent to jail for alleged irregularities in the very first income tax form that he ever completed. The persecution of Rev. Moon perked the interest of American clergy who saw that Rev. Moon was being imprisoned not because of any tax infraction but because some anti-religious forces in America, found his religious views and practices to be controversial.

Rev. Moon used his imprison to rally people not only around his cause for religious freedom but as a way to make the American people aware of the need to the greatest opponent to religious freedom of all, i.e. Marxism-Leninism.
