To the Ocean Once Again

Ina Conneally

When his deepest words were spoken
But not to the heart of men
Turned he sadly, but unbroken
To the ocean once again.

And the sea was understanding
Well attending was the sea
Vast and deep and never-ending
Like the mind of Aboji.

As he gazed into the waters
Fishing hour after hour
Blue-fin, royal sons and daughters
Were attracted by his power.

Casting out your heart unbroken
Reeling silence in again
‘Til the final word is spoken
Use as bait us, fisherman!
