Lusaka, Zambia -- The United Nations Information Center (UNIC) in Lusaka organized a commemoration of Holocaust Memorial Day on January 25 at their Hall. More than 100 guests attended, among them UPF representatives. The theme of this year was "Rescue during the Holocaust: the Courage to Care."

The commemoration started with an opening prayer given by UPF-Zambia Secretary General Rev. Rudolf Faerber. His invocation focused on unity of all races and implored that a tragedy such as the Holocaust would never happen again.

In his introductory message, the MC, UNIC Lusaka Team Assistant Mr. Charles Nonde, explained the importance of observing the event in Zambia, joining other observances worldwide.

The second speaker was Mr. Mickie Mumba, National Information Officer at UNIC-Lusaka, who gave the background of Holocaust and the remarks on the theme. According to him, the commemoration of this event requires each human being to learn a lesson and resolve to prevent such malicious occurrences in the near future.

The third speaker was the British High Commissioner in Zambia, H.E. Mr. James Thornton. In his speech, he emphasized respect for all human beings and upholding human rights.

The Jewish community, led by Rabbi Yalenga, offered a Kaddish prayer followed by candlelight service in which each participant held a candle in memory of those who died, resolving to prevent such tragedies from happening again.

Also during the event, a video clip about the Holocaust and the Rwanda genocide was shown.

At the end of the program, the British High Commissioner in Zambia and two Jewish leaders received copies of Rev. Sun Myung Moon's autobiography from UP- Zambia representatives.
