Festive Maturity

Matthew Huish
December 12, 2010

Despite argument over the exact date on which Jesus of Nazareth was born, I'm quite happy to mark the occasion on the 25th day of the 12th month. Growing up, I detested the hype that placed unnecessary emphasis on the commercial materialism: I think it's important to remember who's birthday we're celebrating. Nevertheless, I've grown to accept that if you're going to celebrate something, you should make an effort to mark the occasion.

One of the things I look forward to during Christmas is eating really good food, and in really generous amounts. Once a year I give myself license to let go and indulge a little in some of the finer things of life. I certainly don't live to eat, but living is more fun when the eating is good.

I remember when I was in my teens, I could quite happily devour astonishing volumes of nourishment, particularly of the fatty and sugary kinds. Lately, however, I've noticed that my still-young-yet-not-quite-as-young-as-before body is developing an intolerance for such unhealthy quantities of such rich food. Oddly enough, it seems to be developing a craving for very sensible foods, such as vegetables and salads. This, of course, would have seemed ludicrous a decade ago.

But I suppose the good thing about Christmas is that there's plenty of variety. The Huish clan is making plans for the Christmas time we will spend together, including thorough preparations in the kitchen. I can look forward to a wide range of culinary cultures, including British, Polish and German cuisine. I must confess that I still am not raving mad about Brussels sprouts -- although I will eat them out of tradition -- but I suppose it's a mark of growing maturity that I do really forward to some well cooked carrots, broccoli and potatoes that will accompany the turkey on the 25th.

And as we all wish each other a Merry Christmas over the next couple of weeks, let's not forget to wish our dear elder brother a happy birthday too!
