UCL Interfaith Society Discusses "Who Is God?"

On Thursday 25th January, the University College of London (UCL) Interfaith Society had a discussion on the topic "WHO IS GOD?" I am the president of this society, a society that I started together with some friends last year. The discussion was attended by eleven people, a small number compared to events last semester, but five of them were new. Two of us were Unificationists, two had Hindu and Christian backgrounds from Nepal, one was Buddhist, one was atheist with a Christian background, and four were Muslims. Sarah Hanna was the only sister present - all the others were brothers!

Before every event I become nervous, because I never know how the event will turn out. The discussion actually started rather informally, because at first we were just talking about university work, but then Kailash, a new person who has a mixed Hindu and Christian background, began asking what everybody thought about the identity of God. The discussion was fuelled by genuine curiosity about different beliefs. Since most of those present were scientists, we began to discuss a wide range of topics, such as genetics and astrophysics, all with the purpose of proving or disproving if God was real. Even though the conversation became quite heated at times, it was conducted with mutual respect for each view, and we built a strong spirit of brotherhood.

At one point, I was asked to share my opinion on who God is. I gave a brief explanation connected to what the Divine Principle says. Everybody present agreed with my explanation! I frequently have this experience of sharing the viewpoint of Divine Principle and people like what Divine Principle says.

The room was booked for 2 hours for our discussion, between 16:00 and 18:00, and at the end we had to leave because another society of UCL wanted to use the room we were occupying. It was very hard to encourage everyone to leave, and even as we left the room and left the building, the conversations continued. Everybody said they would come to the next event on Friday next week. As we departed, embracing each other as brothers, I felt that this was another successful event. I cannot wait until the next event to build upon the growing foundation on my campus, a foundation that will allow God and True Parents to reach, through the people with whom I work, the other students of UCL.
