Dear Families,
I recently heard a great presentation about the human capacity for compassion.
One quote that stood out in my mind was this, "Our human communities are only as healthy as our conception of human nature." As that thought sank in I was reminded of the all to frequent tendency we have to be negative in our outlook on life and on human nature. I think it is often the case that in political or religious communities we sometimes look at the dark side to the detriment of the brighter aspects of our humanity.
Yet compassion, the ability to empathize and feel with another human being, is deeply rooted in our brains, our bodies and our original nature. Mothers naturally nurse and nurture their children. Fathers naturally are wired to protect and defend their families and to find ways to survive in a sometimes hostile environment. Hunting and gathering are communal activities and even in primitive societies the very survival of the tribe depends on the ability of the members to cooperate and support one another. We are bound together and we need to be accountable to one another for our thoughts and words and deeds.
In some ways, our Unification community is like a tribe that must look to one another for spiritual survival. That is why it is so important that we do things such as worship together, meet together for fellowship and spiritual growth and share our lives of faith. Activities like Family Camp are essential to our health and give us the opportunity to strengthen our families so we can create a lasting tradition of building the Kingdom of Heaven on Earth. Even back yard barbecues and informal gatherings for sports can help us bond and strengthen one another in our lives of faith. We need to become honest with one another and guard our selves against temptations to fall into selfish pursuits.
Then, what about extending that compassionate impulse beyond our comfortable boundaries? When we reach out to others with a heart of care and a will to share what we have been given, we become God's arms and legs and eyes and ears. We are moving into an era of direct dominion when God can govern our every thought and action. Father's recent teachings to us in the past few weeks have a common thread. We are called to establish the tradition of Hoon Dok Hae in our families, study the 8 books spelled out by True Father and embody the word in our lives for the sake of saving this suffering world.
Starting in August many changes are coming to our local community. Music ministry is coming to New Hope Family Church and it is going to be great! We are seeing the beginnings of an outpouring of enthusiasm and spiritual motivation to share the Divine Principle and Fathers Autobiography in the coming 40 days and beyond that looking toward the year 2013. Please answer the calling of your heart and your conscience and do what you can to help build God's Kingdom on Earth.
The reward for living a life of practical compassion is pure joy because we can feel our True Parents' love most deeply when we give with a pure heart out of the fullness of our spirit. The pursuit of pleasure for its own sake is sure to lead to despair. The greatest joy comes from living a purpose filled life of the spirit, body, and soul centered on absolute faith in God, absolute love and fidelity to our spouses, filial piety in our families and pure love and compassion for those around us.
See you on Sunday.

Two Church Sailboats Available! Learn To Sail!
Do you see yourself out on the Bay with the wind, the sea, and blue water?
Want to sail the many-splendorous Chesapeake Bay with friends, family, or guests? Two large sailboats (a 26-foot Pearson that sleeps five, and a 30-foot Several, a light air boat, very fast) have been donated to the church. They are docked in Annapolis 35 minutes from New Hope . Grab this opportunity. We're forming an informal "usage group." Collective usage, shared responsibilities, shared costs (modest).
The church Scout Troop will also offer lessons. Call Jake Mas, James Abendroth, or Jim Boothby.
