SEOUL -- Today the Atlantic era, when the Western nations lead the world, is drawing to a close and a new Pacific era is beginning. An effect of this shift is that peace in the global village has become dependent on peace in Northeast Asia, where the world's four great powers rival for dominance. The realization of peace in this region is dependent on whether peace can be brought about on the Korean peninsula, which is divided between north and south.

In other words, the Korean peninsula holds the key to world peace in the Pacific era. We cannot even begin to consider a peace on the Korean peninsula that does not involve the unification of the divided peninsula. As long as division continues, there will always be embers that will flame up and attempt to break up the status quo. Unless the peninsula is unified, the world's four great powers whose interests intersect on the Korean peninsula will not be able to free themselves from the tension that arises from this situation.

Instability in Northeast Asia will endlessly disrupt the processes of peace in a world where these four great powers form the main axis.

The nuclear issue of Kim Jong Il appeared on the stage by shaking the structure of peace in Northeast Asia. Following a 13-month suspension, six-party talks have now been resumed in Beijing as an effort to resolve the North Korean nuclear issue. These talks are perhaps the clearest example of how the issues of the Korean peninsula connect directly to the issue of world peace.

Until now in the six-party talks, participants looked across the table at each other, unable to accept statements by the other side at face value, due to continuing distrust. Time passed, but no results came from the meetings. In the meantime Kim Jung Il continued to build up his nuclear capacity, further aggravating the situation. Henry Kissinger, an authoritative expert on international strategic affairs, has warned that if the six-party talks fail to resolve the North Korean nuclear crisis and if North Korea's possession of nuclear arms becomes fact, then 15 countries, including Japan, Taiwan, Brazil and South Africa, will race to arm themselves with nuclear weapons.

This would destroy the nuclear control regime that is part of the U.S. strategy for world peace. The world will be driven into chaos. For this reason, the United States does not at present exclude the use of military force as an option in resolving the nuclear problem in North Korea. But China is against a solution involving military force. Also, it would be difficult for the United States to decide to use military force on the Korean peninsula, with the Iraq issue not yet resolved and with Iran taking a hard-line stance on its nuclear issue.

All attempts to resolve the problem based on philosophies of power have come up against a wall. Members of the world's elite have utilized all the national strategies that they could think of, but they have failed to find a way out of this tunnel.

At this time when we have reached the limitations of the human intellect, it is proper that we who have gathered within Father [Sun Myung] Moon's true love empire seek an alternate solution based on methods found in God's providential history.

In Cheon Seong Gyeong, Father Moon teaches that "All the difficult problems that humankind faces today can be resolved only through the perfection of true love." Father Moon also states, "True love, not military force, is the way to harmonize the world into oneness."

To resolve North Korea's nuclear issue, the five nations other than North Korea must first become as one. Many things are happening right before our eyes, however, that make such unity difficult.

On July 18, in a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, U.S. President George Bush reversed U.S. policy restricting the sale of nuclear technology and equipment, and decided to allow such sales to India. There can be no doubt that this represented a strategic choice on the part of the United States to raise up India as a counterforce to China, which is growing in power.

With the United States adopting such a policy that is far distant from the philosophy of true love immediately prior to the six-party talks, how can we be optimistic on the future of these talks? We who work to address the issue from within the true love empire consider the six-party talks to be the providential turning point in building an everlasting Peace Kingdom.

The six-party talks include the United States, China, and Russia - which are in the position of the three archangels that were in the Garden of Eden - South Korea - which can be considered the Adam-type nation - and Japan, the Eve-type nation. The Cheon Seong Gyeong tells us that the original ideal of creation was that Eve and the three archangels would unite centering on Adam to become one with God and then enter Heaven.

We must mobilize this providential wisdom for the sake of the six-party talks. If a person with a long record of practicing true love were to emerge in the arena of the talks as a restored Adam-type figure, then don't you think he would unite with Eve, cause the U.S., China and Russia representing the three archangels to follow him, and exercise his providential authority to bring North Korea, the satanic nation, into natural submission so as to resolve the nuclear crisis?

Now I would like to present a proposition that appears to be an immovable principle of the true love empire. It is that God is both a transcendent and an imminent being. He exists far away in Heaven above our heads, but He also exists with us. That is why providential history has unfolded concurrently within secular history. These are not two separate courses, but one. The members of this true love empire are blessed with the gift to be able to discern providential history within secular history.

Cheon Seong Gyeong is a compilation of Father Moon's endeavors to save humankind and the fruit of his true love. I would like to take this opportunity to emphasize that we should all pay due attention to the fact that this book is a treasure house of wisdom that provides us with the resources to resolve international conflicts.

IIFWP members are members of the empire of true love. Let us stand at the forefront in practicing true love. I truly believe that the way to establish peace in Northeast Asia and secure everlasting peace in the world is to spread the way of true love, as taught by Father Moon.
