4) UTS LAUNCHES NEW INTERNSHIP & PLACEMENT INITIATIVE

To serve our current students, alumni and prospective students, UTS is proud to announce the Internship and Placement Initiative (IPI). Our mission is to find paid as well as volunteer internships in service-orientated NGOs in the U.S. and around the world, which will lead to job placement in the same NGOs upon graduation...

5) NORTH DORMITORY RENOVATIONS

Los Angeles FFWPU Region sent the first donation from the field, $2,000. Altogether close to $65,000 has been raised for the North Dorm renovations. The dorms will be open for the Winter Term 2006.

6) TRUSTEES MAKE LANDMARK DECISIONS

The UTS Board took major steps in guiding the school toward a major Capital Campaign, the Doctor of Ministry application, and establishing a 4-year religious college.

7) STUDENT INTERFAITH EXPLORATION

Professor Mark Isaacs, a new teacher at UTS, is doing a great job of introducing our students to the world's great traditions. Chris Antal (UTS '04) complements Prof. Isaac's lectures by organizing the field trips. Chris is now in the midst of developing plans for a "Center for Interfaith Education at UTS." President Hendricks believes that this will be instrumental in recapturing the vitality of the religious dialogues UTS enjoyed in the 70s and 80s. He and Chris envision a renewal of the "White Carpet Room culture" over the coming months and years.

8) MSA TEAM GIVES STELLAR MARKS TO UTS

A Middle States Association Site Team visited UTS in March.

The visiting team commended UTS for its interlinking of financial and strategic planning.

Strategic Plan

The visiting team rated the work in Outcomes Assessment at UTS as exemplary. The visiting team was impressed with the Facilities Audit and Deferred Maintenance Plan 2004-09

11) THE FOUNDER’S SOCIETY

April 16, 2005, in Tarrytown, UTS launched The Founder’s Society at a gala banquet. To "honor the past donors, recognize the foundation that has been laid over the years, and position the school to step aggressively into the future".

The Founder’s Society serves to recognize the significant gifts that major donors have made to UTS throughout the last 30 years The Founder, the Reverend Dr. Sun Myung Moon, set the tradition of generous giving. But no school can endure based upon one donor, no matter how great that donor might be. The Founder himself is looking for other individuals who will reach and surpass his standard of giving to UTS. In 2001, he challenged the UTS alumni to raise $5 million, which he would match.

Rev. Dr. Michael Jenkins (UTS ’77), President of the FFWPU- USA and Vice-Chair, UTS Board of Trustees, then shared about the fundraising drive for the North Dorm Project. He reported that the banquet had far surpassed its goal of $10,000, having reached over $35,000 in contributions. He presented "before and after" photos of the dorms. All were amazed at the transformation that is taking place for the students’ residences.

Dr. David S.C. Kim, UTS President Emeritus, delivered the keynote address, entitled "Ideal Family: To Be or Not To Be—Let Us Learn from the Past." Dr. Kim explained the historical time we are in and advised on how to live a successful life, in particular through marriage and family life.

12) REPORT ON THE CT ALUMNI MEETING

Several alumni of UTS met for a pizza party on April 18th. Here are some of the main points.

That the UTS property is a great asset, a prime location on the Hudson River. Potential for great conference center, or a retreat and spa. With the aging of many members, the possibility of a "silvertown".

Re: UTS as a major conference center. The suggestion came to take an inventory of the conferences being undertaken throughout the unification movement in the USA to see what it would take to attract specific conferences to UTS. There might even be a conference hotel, perhaps available to other customers in the area e.g Bard.

Interest was expressed in UTS as a center of International Peace and a place for Interfaith Dialogue.

Also expressed was that UTS may not be providing an effective bridge with Christianity, which was seen as a major goal of the Founder. Another concern was whether the Trustees had a clear vision for UTS, and if they are steering UTS well. It was suggested that there may be a need to attract trustees with business acumen and/or financial assets.

13) FIRST UTS TELECLASS COURSE

UTS is proud to present its first "teleclass" course. Through this method, students from anywhere in the world can listen to a live presentation and enjoy direct give and take with the professor via the telephone. Learning will be supported through communication via e-mail and/or fax.

Dr. Dietrich Seidel is presenting this first-ever course for credit toward a UTS master's degree or for Continuing Education credit. The topic, "Contemporary Christian Denominations: Reconciliation Through Dialogue," is a lively one that is relevant to the needs of Christians working toward ecumenical fellowship, an important step toward peace in our time.

14) ALUMNI REPORT FROM CALIFORNIA: " BE RELEVANT!"

In May, UTS Alumni Director, Robin Graham, visited the LA area and met UTS alumni on Sunday 22 May.

There are many LA UTS alumni in the teaching profession. Several ideas emerged: upgrading the certificates from UTS to degrees, offering distance education to support ongoing credits teachers earn, UTS being relevant to the needs of those involved in outreach to Christian churches e.g through biblical research, or providing educational opportunity to those churches and groups. More ideas emerged. Ideas for mentoring youth and students, for position papers to be published at UTS, for alumni to post their best sermons on the web-site. Key thoughts revolved around UTS being a resource for alumni in the field. The bottom line from Southern Cal is for UTS TO BE RELEVANT.

15) UTS WEST COAST SUMMER TOUR 2005

August 2nd through August 9th
Henry Christopher (UTS ‘80), Director of Admissions
Robin Graham (UTS ‘80), Director of Alumni Relations and Development

Billings, MT

Learn from church congregations

Scout programs

UTS needs to be responsive to needs of church leaders (alumni)

Have Billings church put on a workshop for other communities

Pastor or leader may be stressed. This is then passed on to spouse.

Need for marriage counseling, practical guidance, financial investment counseling.

Does the curriculum meet the needs of alumni?

Examine the effectiveness of the curriculum of UTS, and the effectiveness of UTS administration.

How does UTS relate with local community in Red Hook as a practical application of pastoral care?

Use local churches and their organizations to place interns e.g. food program, scouts etc

A Pastor’s Appreciation Day (like other churches).

There is a need to screen applicants for pastor positions and internships e.g. relationship with spouse may reveal a major red flag, or look for a lack of respect.

Need for mentors.

Need a shared vision of UTS President and FFWPU Leadership.

Need assessment of learning from family, from inter-religious dialogue

Need evaluation.

Need institutes to craft direction.

UTS education seems academic versus world reality

The Unification culture seems obedience-centered not wisdom-centered

Need preparation of pastors and continuing education

Local church would be helped by graduates with skills in counseling, and ability to speak English, with respect for the membership and the local community.

San Leandro, CA

Invite successful model leaders to give workshops to the community Ambassadors for Peace as tools to build successful programs.

There is a cost to poor leadership

Need to train people to give sermons

Skill development: a) How to raise money b) How to build a church

c) How to speak about divorce d) How to deal with death

It would be valuable if Korean leaders could teach about Father’s heart and leave the day to day organization and financial matters to American leaders. How to inspire 2nd generation to see a model of pastoral leadership?

People give money to a vision not to a need

Value of sermons being published

Need UTS to provide position papers e.g. after 9/11 or on Islam

Every aspect of money needs to be taught.

Earning an income, money management, college funding, retirement planning

Person coming to local area needs to be relevant. How can UTS help?

Need a video/communications ministry perhaps UTS could foster this. Many 2nd generation have interest and growing skills in photo/video.

How can church serve UTS?

Help is needed with communications in the field.

UTS can be a trusted 3rd party, an arbiter.

UTS could interview influential people e.g. in non profit world or business to exemplify models of leadership

If UTS can be trusted then this will be a model for alumni and other’s children to show best principles, practice and projects.

Use scouting in local communities

There is a need for a Sunday School Curriculum

Workshops for continuing education

UTS could act as a "speakers bureau" to organize for alumni events and church events

Portland, OR

Does E Cornerstone monitor what it prints? e.g. letters to the editor.

UTS could use online courses

Feedback that Dr. Seidel’s tele-class is working well

Could extension centers be more flexible to access education?

Be like Fuller Theological Seminary and have teaching in Korean/ and writing papers in Korean. Each class at FTS has a Korean translator.

UTS could reach out to every single church to connect them to UTS

Open the way for First Generation Unificationists to attend. There are for example, empty nesters who might attend.

UTS is an institution beyond MRE, MDiv or DMin to give professional education for church managers etc

Is UTS relevant?

Is there a subsidy mind-set at UTS?

Who are the desired target clients?

Better communication needed.

There are all sorts of educational resources in Korea and Japan: are these being translated? USA movement not as mature as Korea and Japan so could use their material.

Value of UTS as first educational institution.

Teach students the practical realities e.g. INS, green card,

Seattle, WA

Substantial curriculum needed

Student thesis tailored to help people /pastors in the field

16) CAMPAIGN FOR UTS

President Tyler Hendricks and the Board of Trustees announced September 20th the launch of the Campaign for UTS. This initiative has been carefully cultivated by the Trustees and coincides with a new stage in the growth and development of UTS. This year marks the anniversary of the Founding of UTS. It is 30 years since Rev. Sun Myung Moon opened UTS to the first class, the great Class of 1977. Alumni from that first class continue to work tirelessly to support the dream and vision of Rev. Moon. The Class of 1977 was fortunate to spend many hours with the Founder and share many personal moments. Several alumni from that class have expressed their desire to share in the legacy and the ownership of UTS to help propel UTS successfully on its next 30 year path of growth. The Campaign for UTS helps them and other like-minded alumni and friends be part of that continuing vision.

Over the next 5 years, $1.8 million will be raised to cover capital improvements, educational program development, upgrading the quality of student life, and scholarship funding. The renovation of the North Dormitory is the first project of the Campaign, and will soon be completed and be a valuable addition to student housing. In the coming weeks you will learn more about the Campaign for UTS, and how you can be a charter member of the stewardship team.

21) THE YOUNG OON KIM MEMORIAL EVENING, SUNDAY OCT 16th

The Young Oon Kim Memorial Evening at the Arbor Ballroom in Washington, D.C. October 16th, 2005. It honored her life, her work and her legacy. Two UTS Alumni Awards were presented, one for Distinguished Achievement to Anthony Ferrantello of Mobile, AL, and one for Distinguished Service to Tom Picard of Phoenix, AZ

This event launched the Young Oon Kim Scholarship Fund, for the education of second generation in the larger Washington, D.C. area who will pursue a Masters Degree at UTS and return to lead youth ministry in the area. The "New Outlook" Window Campaign also provides an opportunity for giving, especially relevant as an energy conserver in this time of increasing fuel prices.

22) CELEBRATION OF DR. KIM'S 90th BIRTHDAY

The first President of UTS, Dr. David S. C. Kim, celebrated his 90th birthday on Saturday November 12, 2005, at UTS.

Dr. Kim began his tenure as the UTS founding President in 1975, and served with distinction for 19 years. In the process he was instrumental in establishing the New Ecumenical Research Association (New ERA), the Rose of Sharon Press, the Global Congress on World Religions, and the National Council on Church and Social Action. He also guided the school through its course of obtaining its Absolute Charter from the New York State Education Department (1990). Dr. Kim was also one of the five charter members of the Unification church, its first foreign missionary (to Wales) and one of its first missionaries to the United States (1959).

Dr. Kim is best remembered, however, for his effervescent spirit and loving personal guidance to the students and faculty. The 90th Birthday will provide an opportunity for all those whose lives David Kim touched to offer back their love, stories and congratulations.

23) ICE BOATING AND NATURE CLUB

The UTS students can learn about ice boat sailing, a unique chance to experience a traditional sport of the historic Hudson Valley. Henry Christopher announced the opening of the Barrytown Nature Club today, which is open to all members of the Red Hook/Barrytown community and of course to the UTS students to learn of the wildlife and plants which are abundant on the Barrytown property.
