Vision 2020

Michael Balcomb
August 2013

We're currently celebrating the first anniversary of the Reverend Dr. Sun Myung Moon's Seonghwa, or ascension. Through this day, we feel his spirit with us, empowering us. His wife, the Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, is now leading the way in building on his legacy through Vision 2020, an initiative to fulfill Reverend Moon's hopes and dreams for humanity by the year 2020, which marks the 100th year after his birth. It is our challenge to take that dream, make it our own and turn it into a living reality that will ignite the future. This is the essence of Vision 2020. Making our dreams real takes faith, hope, confidence -- and a good plan.

One of the key elements of any successful strategic plan, according to management guru Peter Drucker, is to first decide what you're not going to do, because focus is an essential element on the road to success. The Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon has applied this wisdom in her vision for a bright future: the success and support of 43 nations, which will give our movement a stronger foundation. By investing in these focused areas, a larger and more lasting impact can be made. Each country has been invited to consider how it can contribute to Reverend Moon's legacy. Here in the United States, every local community of Unificationists is partnering up with two other nations in a relationship of friendship and support, working together to cultivate the foundation that Reverend Moon built in his lifetime. We know from experience that we will learn much more from the developing nations that we partner with, than we are able to give. That is the beauty of a principled, mutually profitable relationship, the kind of relationship in which everyone benefits and grows.

Though most of us are already busy and overextended and feel there just isn't a moment of time to commit to something as grand as Vision 2020, the secret is to digest this plan not as individuals or families, but as a community. The brilliance of this strategy here in the United States is that each person and each local ministry can leverage their community to build momentum by working together in a variety of ways toward this common goal. Dr. Moon said that it is impossible for one person to carry out the many directions that Reverend Moon gave in the course of his lifetime: however, each of us can pick some aspect of his vision and, together with others, invest in it. We can answer God's call today by making our home a base camp for God and reaching out to our friends and neighbors.

In being part of igniting the future, we, as communities, can create a lifestyle that includes teaching, living and sharing the truth as a natural part of our everyday lives. When we change, the world can change. When we apply the Divine Principle in our lives, we see big changes. Engaging in meaningful relationships through shared passions with our neighbors and friends from around the world will make for a stronger global family.

It is amazing how far we've come in the one year.

On this first anniversary of Reverend Moon's ascension, we can choose to believe in the transforming power of the Word with all our minds and hearts. God is ready to pour down blessings as never before.
