The Day of Hope rally held at Madison Square Garden on September 18, 1974, in New York, the first in a tour of eight major cities was attended by an audience of 25,000. Reverend Moon spoke about the advent of Messiah and purpose of the Second Coming.

By the time the program began at seven o'clock, every seat at Madison Square Garden was taken. Outside, some of those who were prevented from entering clashed with security officers. Meanwhile some groups demonstrated against the rally. American media interest in the rally was sufficient to thrust the Unification Church into the focus of world news.
